Woodcut portrait of T. Thomas Fortune from The Colored American (Washington, D.C.: African-American newspaper) , September 1, 1900, p. 9 from an article by Bruce Gray decrying the New York Morning Telegraph's assertion that the New York Race Riot was caused by T. Thomas Fortune of the New York Age. T. Thomas Fortune (1856-1928) was a black slave from Marianna, Florida who achieved national fame as the editor of the New York Age newspaper.
