Summary Note

Sol Cahn was a businessman and civic leader in Pensacola during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He operated Sol Cahn & Co., a grocery store on the corner of Palafox and Intendencia Streets. He also served as Mayor pro tem between 1898-1899 under Mayor William Hazard Northup.

  &nnsp; In 1905, in the publication "The New Pensacola: Pensacola, the Deep Water City" a promotional book published by the Pensacola News, the Sol Cahn & Co., is listed as #201-203 Palafox, that he has been in business for 7 years (start date of 1898?), employs 5 clerks and has 4 delivery wagons, 2 phones, and takes phoned-in orders.

  &nnsp; The T. T. Wentworth "They Were Here' picture book notes: Sol Cahn, Born November 28, 1862, Died October 20, 1922." "A Pensacolian who was well known and highly respected was in retail grocery business for many years. Served as a member of the Board of City Aldermen. Was a Director of the Mutual Building and Loan Association, the Pensacola Home and Savings Association, the First National Bank. Was a member of Temple Beth-El, Scottish Rite Masonry, a Charter member of the Shrine, and a Charter member of the Rotary Club."

  &nnsp; His parents were Lazarus Cahn (1824-1867) and Fredericka Hirsch Cahn (1821-1895). Information from David Woody, Find-A-Grave registry. Mr. Cahn is buried in Temple Beth-El Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida.

  &nnsp; This photograph was part of the travelling statewide exhibit on Jewish history in Florida, titled MOSAIC in 1991. At each exhibition, certain panels were changed to include photographs and objects loaned by local Jewish families and congregations. While at UWF in 1991, the panels told stories of Pensacola and Milton families.
