Scope and Contents

Research materials concerning Thomas Jefferson Jernigan (1825-1903) and the Jernigan family of Santa Rosa County, Florida, some compiled by Buddy Mitchell.  Includes a store ledger (1902-1903) with his Jernigan’s 1902 personal reminiscence of his life, family, and his grandfather Benjamin Jernigan who built the first sawmill in Milton, Florida.  Other topics include the Daniels family, Timothy Twitchell, the Jernigan Ferry, Fort Crawford, and alternate spellings of the family name (Journigan, Jernagan), as well as some recipes for fertilizing crops (cotton, corn, potatoes), poultices for horses, and whitewash.

Biographical or Historical Information

Thomas Jefferson Jernigan (1825-1903) was the grandson of Benjamin Jernigan, one of the original settlers of Santa Rosa County and who built the first sawmill in Milton, Florida.  These research materials are about him, Benjamin Jernigan, and other related Jernigans of this family.
