The Department of Computer Services was a unit under the Vice President for Administrative Affairs, and charged with oversight of computer resources to both academic and administrative areas of the University. In 1980, the Director of Computer Services was George White. Russell Lee became Director on April 11, 1980, a position he held until joining the faculty of the College of Education in early 1995.

In 1986, the Computer Center (Building 79) was dedicated to house both the Department of Computer Services and the academic Division of Computer Science (originally the Department of Systems Science--this was separated from the College of Business and given Division status by Provost Friedrich on July 1, 1987.)

In 1991, a review and study of the Department of Computer Services was initiated by President Marx and this culminated in the decision by Provost Friedrich to separate the Department into two new divisions: Institutional Computing Department (ICD) and the Administrative Systems Department (ASD). This reorganization was announced in January 1995. With this split of Computer Services, the Department as an integral unit ceased.
